Lions Day Naples: Vision Screening in Piazza del Plebiscito
On April 12th, in Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, Dr. Sergio Ferone took part in a day of free vision screenings organized with the support of the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired (ETS - APS) and IAPB Italia (ETS). It was an initiative that brought prevention directly to people, also thanks to the presence of a mobile ophthalmic unit.
The data highlight a simple yet often underestimated reality: many people are not aware of their actual visual condition:
Outdated or incorrect eyeglasses are still being used
Early warning signs are often ignored
Eye examinations that could make a difference are postponed
Having a vision check does not only mean improving visual quality in the present, but also preventing future damage and protecting eye health over time.
Conditions such as glaucoma, for example, can progress silently in their early stages. This is precisely why prevention is essential.
Bringing screening services into public spaces means making prevention accessible, practical, and immediate.
What we observed during this day is a clear signal: there is still a strong need for awareness, regular check-ups, and a culture of visual prevention. It is important to regularly rely on qualified centers and competent optical professionals available within your local area.
Special thanks to Dr. Catello Scarfato from Gragnano and to the President of the Italian Union of the Blind in Naples, Giuseppe Ambrosino.
The dieci decimi optical center, located in Cilea street (Naples, Vomero area), has always been committed to vision screening and prevention initiatives.
The center regularly organizes activities dedicated to eye health, with a specific focus on low vision, visual rehabilitation, diplopia, and advanced contact lens practice.
This approach is supported by the use of advanced technology and the presence of a multidisciplinary team of specialized professionals.
